How do we build Health?
Written by Margaret Strause January 23, 2023
Although the answer is multi-faceted, one way we can build health is by providing our bodies with the essential nutrition it needs - through food first.

What is essential nutrition?

Protein provides the building blocks of the body. Every cell from bone to skin to hair contains protein.
An essential nutrient is a nutrient required for normal body function that either cannot be made by the body or cannot be made in amounts adequate for good health and therefore must be provided by the diet.
Protein, for example, is one of the 6 essential nutrients.

Basically, proteins are the building blocks of life because every cell in the human body contains proteins. We need protein in our diet to build and repair cells. It is important for the growth and development of children, teens and pregnant women and all of your hormones and antibodies are composed of protein.

Proteins are made up of amino acids, SO it’s absolutely necessary to provide our bodies with an ongoing supply of amino acids to replenish those that are used to rebuild our tissues and carry out other important functions in our body.

And while the body can create some amino acids on its own, essential amino acids can only come from diet.

Besides being the building blocks of protein, essential amino acids help:
  • Break down food
  • Grow and repair
  • Make hormones and brain chemicals (neurotransmitters)
  • Maintain healthy skin, hair, and nails
  • Build muscle
  • Boost your immune system
  • Help sustain a normal digestive system
  • Provide an energy source
There are 9 Essential Amino Acids. These are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine.

Although you don’t need to eat foods with amino acids at every meal, it’s important to get a balance of them throughout your day.

What foods contain amino acids?

Eating a diet that includes meats, eggs, soy, chia seeds, tofu, dairy, buckwheat, and quinoa are great options. Hemp is also a good source of essential amino acids.

When we don't get enough essential amino acids, we can risk serious health problems like physical weakness, reduced immunity, and depression. These are just a few of the potential problems that can come from a deficiency of essential amino acids.
Sometimes it becomes a challenge to get enough EEA’s from diet, especially for those that exercise regularly. Intense training and physical exercise require increased amounts of essential amino acids to build the muscle and endurance required for these kinds of activities.
